GULF BREEZE – In order to increase the chances for successful protection of homes and businesses from this aggressive termite, Representative Doug Broxson (R–Gulf Breeze) and the United Peninsula Association are hosting a public workshop for area residents. Experienced staff from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Bureau of Entomology and Pest Control will present methods of controlling Formosan termites. Rep. Broxson stated, “We have seen an increase in termites over the past few years. It is frightening to think of the damage these infestations can do to a person’s home. This workshop is intended to educate and inform constituents on the steps they can take to protect their single largest asset.”
The Formosan termite has extended its range to include Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Counties. Florida’s temperate climate provides a perfect environment for termites. Reports from residents of Gulf Breeze and Navarre, Florida indicate large populations of Formosan swarmers in recent years. These reports may indicate an increase in the population of the Formosan termite and, consequently, increased risk of structural damage in this area.
